Late-Night Conversation
"Sorry," I said, abruptly ceasing the flow of my discourse to my half-asleep husband, "I forgot you needed to get to sleep. I'll be quiet now. Goodnight. I love you."
A few minutes of silence ensued, and then:
"Mmm-hmm."
I rolled over and looked at him in the dimness. "Honey, I stopped talking."
"That's good. Goodnight. Love you," he murmured.
Amused, I rolled back over. Sleepy protestations ensued as I lifted my head from his chest but subsided as I settled back against him.
Another few moments of silence, then:
"That's very funny."
I'd been lost in thought and half-sleep. I was completely confused. "What's very funny?"
"Whatever you just said. Goodnight. I'm going to sleep now."
"That's good, dear. You go to sleep."
That time, he did.
